Stretching for Flexibility and Fitness

ur43i

Stretching is an important part of any overall fitness routine. It helps to improve your flexibility, an important component of overall fitness. In turn, improving your flexibility helps to maximize your body’s ability to move freely and helps you avoid injury.

If running or any cardio activity for that matter is part of your fitness routine, make sure you stretch properly before and after your workout. Don’t stretch completely cold. First do a moderate warm up (jumping jacks, burpees or a brisk walk), then perform these stretches before and after you hit the road or track. Never skimp on stretching!

STRETCHING DO’S & DON’TS

Do:

Spend time doing dynamic stretches – gentle movement to increase your range of motion – before exercising.

Prepare your body with fluid flowing movements such as arm circles, leg swings and gentle bending.

Dedicate at least 10 minutes after a workout to loosen tight muscles with static stretches that you hold for approximately 30 seconds.

Don’t:

Use jerky, bouncing or forced movements to increase your range of motion as this can cause injury.

Stretch to the point of pain or severe discomfort.
